The History of Wine in South Africa On February 2, 1659 Jan van Riebeeck, the first commander of the Cape of Good Hope, wrote in his diary: “Today, praise be to God, wine was made for the first time from Cape grapes”. Virtually all of South Africa’s vineyards are located within a 160-kilometre sweep of Cape Town. The first vines were planted in 1655 and the wines were not, by all accounts, particularly successful. Governor Simon van der Stel, who arrived in 1679, complained about the “revolting sourness” of the local wines. He proceeded to remedy the situation by founding Constantia, the most illustrious wine farm in the country’s history. The arrival of French Huguenots, with their viticulture and winemaking expertise, greatly improved the quality of Cape wines, and by the early 1700s they were beginning to be held in high esteem. When French Revolutionary forces entered Holland in 1806, the British occupied the Cape and cut off from supplies of French wines, began exporting South African wines to the many corners of the empire, enhancing the wine’s growing reputation. Special recognition was given to the sweet wines of Constantia. By 1859, the export of Cape wines to Britain alone had reached 45,000 hectolitres. However, in Britain, Cobden (the apostle of the free market) and Gladstone secretly negotiated a commercial treaty with the French that had a devastating effect on this trade. In 1860, Cape wine export fell to 22,000 hectolitres; the next year it dropped to 5,700 hectolitres; and by 1865 it was as low as 4,200 hectolitres. Despite this setback to the wine trade, production was not checked. In fact, the large influx of immigrants attracted by the discovery of gold and diamonds in the late 19th century prompted a rapid expansion of vineyards in anticipation of a vastly increased demand. But the sudden wealth of these immigrants sparked off the Boer War, and sales of wine decreased at home and abroad. Yet unsalable wine continued to be made. When the KoÖperatiewe Wijnbouwers Vereniging, or KWV as it is now known, was formed in 1918 with government-backed powers, its decision to distil half the country’s annual wine production into brandy immediately and very effectively improved the quality of Cape wines. Three centuries later, this date again appears, February 2 1990, the release of Nelson Mandela. Since this famous political prisoner took his first steps towards freedom, the South African wine industry has changed beyond all recognition. During the apartheid years, it was over-controlled and wine producers were unable to export freely, owing to the world’s reluctance to trade with this country. Today South African wines are serious contenders in the world of international wine, and the industry is well poised to meet the demands of the new century. |

ChardonnayChardonnay, a name now so familiar with wine lovers over the world that some do not realize that it is the name of a vine variety. In its Burgundian homeland, Chardonnay was for long the sole vine responsible for all of the finest white Burgundy. Chardonnay has had a chequered history in South Africa with some of the first cuttings so named being eventually identified as the very much less exciting Auxerrois. Naturally this was some time ago and the quality of clones planted has since improved steadily. Chardonnay

Springfield ‘Life From Stone’ Sauv.Blanc (2023)Deriving its name from the incredibly rocky soils in which it is grown. Every year the vineyard battles against nature to produce highly concentrated, powerful wines with a flinty, mineral character true to the quartz rock in which it is grown. Stones have no flavour that they impart on wine - they simply make the soil less. If there is less soil the vine produces more concentrated fruit, the same happens with old vines, also when vines are planted in high density. As the rock opposes the vine so does a nearby plant, and age limit growth and crops. Life from Stone has the good fortune to have all these 3 concentrating factors in its favor – thus the unmatched complexity of a great wine. This unique terroir adds a distinctive minerality to the wine, accentuating its lively citrus and green apple notes. The wine is fermented in stainless steel tanks, which help to preserve its freshness and vibrant acidity. RieslingA great white wine grape associated most obviously but by no means exclusively with Germany. Riesling wine, wherever produced, is notable for its rapier-like aroma, variously described as flowery, steely, honeyed, and whichever blend of mineral elements is conveyed by the individual vineyard site. In South Africa one finds three “different” names for Riesling: Weisser Riesling, Rhine Riesling and Paarl Riesling. The first two is in fact the same grape variety; the Riesling grown in Germany but Paarl Riesling is the South African name for Crouchen, a much more neutral grape variety Riesling

Pinot NoirThe great red Burgundy grape. Unlike Cabernet which can be grown in all but the very coolest conditions and can be economically viable as an inexpensive but recognizable Cabernet wine, Pinot Noir demands much of both vine-grower and vine maker. It is a tribute to the unparalleled level of physical excitement generated by tasting one of Burgundy’s better reds that so many wine producers want to try their hand with this capricious wine. If Cabernet produces wines to appeal to the head. Pinot’s charms are decidedly more sensual and more transparent. Pinot Noir is sometimes likened to a ballerina, soft and gracious but with enough power and dexterity to leap when needed. Pinot Noir

Cederberg Ghost Corner Pinot Noir (2023 - PN 1)Fifth-generation owner and Cellar Master David Nieuwoudt leads a talented 'team with attitude' to produce award-winning wines from his high-lying vineyards that flourish in a pure, virus-free environment. The Ghost Corner range is inspired by the extreme coastal area around Cape Agulhas near Elim, known as ‘Spookdraai’ where many ships have been wrecked. Folklore has it that the ghosts of sailors who perished through the years can be seen wandering the wild waters. These wines are as intriguing and extreme as the story of their origin at the southernmost tip of the Cape winelands. Translucent red in color with dazzling ruby flashes. The nose abounds with strawberry compote, cranberries and earthy pomegranate, the latter perfectly balanced by savory aromas of Parma ham and smoky bacon with just a hint of dusty scrub bush. The palate is chiseled and precise with a lingering saline, savory presence. The refreshing acidity and wet tea leaf flavors create a halo effect on the finish. This wine, while seductive in its youth, will reward those with patience as the wine gains savory complexity with a few years ageing. 13.5 Alc - LIMITED STOCK! Cabernet SauvignonThe world’s most renowned grape variety for making fine, long-lived red wine. Originating in Bordeaux, particularly the well-drained Médoc and Graves, where this late ripening vine is almost invariably blended with other grapes. It is Cabernet Sauvignon’s remarkable concentration of tannins, pigments, and flavour compounds that really sets it aside from most widely grown grape varieties. It is therefore easily capable of producing deeply coloured wines worthy of long acerbation and wood ageing. The particular appeal of Cabernet Sauvignon lies much less in primary fruit aromas than the much more subtle flavour compounds that evolves into a subtle bouquet. Cabernet Sauvignon

Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon (2012 – CS 2)The distinct ravine in the Stellenbosch Kloof ward allows the opportunity to harness the cooling influences from the False Bay on our south and east facing slopes. This captures the intense flavour compounds found in the grape skins Progressive techniques such as overhead fermenters, pump-overs and gravity flow allow for the extraction of fully developed flavours and soft ripe tannins without compensating the tension and elegance captured from the various Cabernet slopes. Here especially, the climate plays a significant role to allow great fruit expression and classic essences of cedar, brambles and toasted tobacco. The wine was racked into barrels where it underwent malolactic fermentation. After further racking it spent 18 months in new and used French oak barrels, before being lightly filtered prior to bottlings Perfect to drink now. Springfield “Whole Berry” Cab.Sauvignon (2015 - CS 4)Set in the heart of the mountain-ringed Robertson Valley in the Western Cape of South Africa, Springfield Estate is a family-run wine farm owned by ninth-generation descendants of French Huguenots, who came to South Africa from the Loire in 1688 with bundles of vines under their arms .In order to achieve a luscious, juicy wine, we try to have as little intervention in the cellar as possible. Simply de-stemmed, the whole, uncrushed bunches are transported using only a gravity flow system. Whole berry maceration is followed by fermentation with natural yeasts, racking and one year’s maturation in oak barrels. The result is a velvety wine with softer tannins and classical varietal characteristics. This traditional wine is unfiltered and unfined, which may deposit sediment. 2015 Near –perfect conditions produced a smaller but pristine crop displaying exceptional quality across the style spectrum. Thelema “The Mint” Cabernet Sauvignon (2014 - CS 5)François Rabelais was a monk, doctor and writer in sixteenth-century France who imagined a utopian abbey on the banks of the Loire. In stark contrast to the religious orders of his day, this community admitted both men and women and encouraged them to live together in great luxury. Only one law governed its members: “Fay ce que vouldras” – Do what thou wilt! This was the Abbey of Thélème, which ultimately lent its name to our vineyard on the slopes of the Simonsberg Mountain: Thelema The most likely source of the “mint” character could be attributed to the airborne transfer from the Eucalyptus trees, which border this specific Cabernet Sauvignon Vineyard, to the grape berries. It is believed that the berries outer wax layer could adsorb Eucalyptol, a compound responsible for the aroma, released into the air by the trees. It subsequently becomes dissolved during the fermentation process, which takes place on the skins, inevitably giving the wine a “minty” character unique to this vineyard. Ripe red berry, cassis and dark chocolate flavours are complimented by hints of mint and on the palate. The wine has fine tannins with a long, mocha finish. Jordan ‘Black Magic’ Merlot (2015 - M 9)The name Merlot is thought to be a diminutive of merle, the French name for the blackbird. Blended Red WinesIt has become very fashionable to consume single cultivar wines and one can often hear someone say: “I prefer a Cab or I prefer a Shiraz” So why does anyone still produce blended wines. The fact of the matter is that even single varietals wines are in most cases blends as the winemaker is allowed by law to add up to 15% of a variety not on the label, so he might add some Merlot to soften the Cab etc. In France most wines are blended wines. In fact, in some regions a wine may be a blend of up to 12 varieties and white and red grapes may even be blended together. Blends simply allow the winemaker to create a wine from his different vineyard blocks that truly reflect the terroir rather than the grape variety. Blended Red Wines

De Trafford ‘ Elevation 393’ (2015 - BL 6)A small family winery in the mountains above Stellenbosch South A. established in 1992 by David Trafford & artist wife Rita. Elevation 393 their flagship wine, a selection of the best barrels from their home vineyard at 393m above sea level. Instead of a plan of the winery on the label, the bottle shows an elevation drawing of their home in the middle of the vineyard. Usually, the core of the blend is Cabernet Sauvignon which is in the middle of the vineyard. Followed by Merlot, from the richer clay soil at the bottom of the vineyard & Syrah, at the highest and steepest section. The aim of Elevation is to express this remarkable site to the full and accentuate the character of each vintage, rather than a more homogeneous style. Attractive deep red, youthful colour at 7 years old. Rich intense spicy fruitcake nose with a mix of black and red berries. Some fine tobacco, toast and cedar from the fine French oak. Intense, concentrated palate with thick, broad tannins, though still fine. Long finish and loads of potential. Elegant dry tannin running with the complex spicy fruit from beginning to end of a long fine finish. Best 2023 to 2035. 14.5 % Alc. 5* Platter- 95/100 Tim Atkin - Limited Stock WO Stellenbosch

Hartenberg ‘The Mackenzie’ (2018 - BL 2)Hartenberg Family Vineyards - Est. 1692 – is nestled in a valley on the slopes of the Bottelary Hills in Stellenbosch. Since the early 200s Hartenberg has been pesticide-free, pioneering the use of historically indigenous insects to control pest insect populations instead. The end result of this is that all vineyards younger than twenty years continue to be virus free. In honour of the Mackenzie family that headed the development of the new era at the Estate. Their vision remains simple: To do whatever it takes to produce wines of outstanding quality by anybody's standards. Initially red fruit aromatics, then a blend of spicy, cedary oak, classic cigar box and wood vanilla aromas lift from the glass. The palate entry is rich and rounded, but settles to an elegant mid- palate showing a brightness of fruit and finishes with fine-grained tannins. Grape variety: 72% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Petit Verdot 7% Malbec 7% Cabernet Franc .The wine has a pedigree to age a decade or longer Alc 14.0 % Platter 4,5* Platter IWSC Bronze Award, Decanter World Award Bronze, 94/100 Tim Atkins WO Stellenbosch

Jordan Cobblers Hill (2015 - BL 3)The Ultimate Expression of Jordan Terroir. A limited-release wine, honouring the Jordan family heritage as master cobblers Fashion is fickle and with everyone pre-occupied with reds which are medium bodied and can be drunk slightly chilled, Bordeaux-style blends which tend to be more intense seem to be suffering from a lack of attention. For those who still like their reds to be substantial, Jordan Cobblers Hill 2015 is a fine proposition. 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 43% Merlot and 9% Cabernet Franc, it was matured for 24 months in oak, 70% new and at this stage of its life, it’s nothing if not dense and brooding. The nose is initially quite closed but opens wonderfully to reveal cassis, cranberry, violets, vanilla and oak spice. The palate is richly layered and intriguing with a variety of opulent flavours which includes Sichuan pepper and blackcurrants. The 24-month barrel ageing adds viscosity and a spicy finish. There’s also an herbaceous edge to the wine – not minty and quite attractive, providing lift and refreshment. The wine is perfect to drink now until 2024. 14.5 % Alc, 4.5 * Platter 91/100 Tim Atkin, 2018 National Wine Challenge - Double Platinum WO Stellenbosch

Ataraxia Serenity (2015 - BL 9)“Ataraxia = a serene state of mind free from worry and preoccupation “ Hemel-en-Aarde is Afrikaans for “heaven and earth” and the claim is justified. The estate sits on a particularly heavenly stretch of land beneath a lofty peak of the Babylon’s Tower mountain range. In 2004 The Skyfields Farm was visioned into the Ataraxia wine label when husband and wife Kevin and Hanli Grant and a few friends purchased this 47-hectare prime vineyard property. Two decades later we are associated with crafting wines of incredible finesse balance and depth. Kevin Grant has just one goal for Ataraxia’ s red blend – to have the confidence to “whisper” style through the ultimate expression of site rather than “shout” brashness though winemaking excesses. Consequently he does not focus on the cultivars that make up this blend and has never disclosed them. His quest is to show that “where from” is far more important than “what from” in achieving a particular wine style and that wine with a sense of place is the truest expression of its personality. Tasting notes: A wine that possesses a finely scented, vibrant nose with hints of red berry fruit andintriguing mineral and spicy notes. Mouth-watering and polished grape tannins are wrapped in an elegant structure that subtly occupies all corners of one’s palate. Intriguing, unusual and lingering. deft hand of its maker. Alc 14.0. 2004Long and late, bedevilled by uneven berry-set and an early aroma-stripping heat wave. Yet cooler dry conditions yielded healthy, elegant, often age worthy wines with lower alcs and yielding tannins. Chardonnay, Merlot and Shiraz especially promising. Cape Vintage Guide, 2004 , 2004
2005Short, early and particularly challenging. Bone-dry winter followed by early-season rains, sparking disease and excessive plant vigour; then prolonged heat waves. Concentrated if alcoholic reds; whites mostly average, some stellar exceptions. Cape Vintage Guide, 2005 , 2005
2006Excellent and largely problem free (though complicated by Western Cape power cuts) Perhaps the best white-wine vintage in a decade – particularly expressive Sauvignons and Chenins. Fleshy mild tannined reds, with lower alcohols all round. Cape Vintage Guide, 2006 , 2006
2007Started hot and fast, ended with rain & lower temperatures. High hopes for elegant structured whites, notably Sauvignon; smaller red-grape berries resulted intense colour and fruit concentration, especially for Cab and Shiraz. Cape Vintage Guide, 2007 , 2007
2008Long, wet, late and challenging but also unusually cool season, favouring elegance in both reds and whites, with ripeness generally achieved at lower alcohols. Cape Vintage Guide, 2008 , 2008
2009Perhaps one of the greatest Cape vintages. Late and gruelling but whites and reds both look stellar. Standout Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Riesling, Shiraz and Cabernet and Merlot. Cape Vintage Guide, 2009 , 2009
2010“A thinking winemaker’s harvest”, with destructive winds, unseasonable rains, heat waves and reduced crops hitting many areas. Later ripening whites and reds, and cooler /sheltered areas seem to have fared best – but very difficult to generalise. Cape Vintage Guide, 2010 , 2010
2011Yet more variable than last vintage, impossible to generalise. As in 2010, producer’s track record should guide the buying/cellaring decision. Cape Vintage Guide, 2011 , 2011
2012Unusually dry, hot January strained unirrigated vineyards; otherwise, good to very good vintage for both reds and whites; moderate alcohol levels. Cape Vintage Guide, 2012 , 2012
2013Biggest crop to date, moderate conditions yielded good to very good reds and whites, lighter alcohol levels. Cape Vintage Guide, 2013 , 2013
2014Later, slightly smaller and unusually cool, among wettest pre-seasons in years. Seemingly lighter, less powerful wines, potential for fine concentrations and elegance if picked judiciously. Cape Vintage Guide, 2014 , 2014
2015Near–perfect conditions produced a smaller but pristine crop displaying exceptional quality across the style spectrum. One of the great vintages possibly surpassing 2009 Cape Vintage Guide, 2015 , 2015
2016Exceptionally hot, dry and challenging, with later-ripening varieties benefiting from lower temperatures. In cool climates, disease-free conditions could yield some stellar wines. Cape Vintage Guide, 2016 , 2016
2017Growers expecting a worsening of 2016’s drought and extreme heat were pleasantly surprised when the latter failed to materialise, resulting in a smaller but excellent crop with freshness and fine flavour concentration on reds as well as whites Cape Vintage Guide, 2017 , 2017
2018Challenging year for reds and whites, lingering drought requiring particular focus on optimal picking times, conserving vine resources and managing extractions. Generally healthy, smaller berries yielded sound, concentrated if perhaps earlier-peaking wines. Cape Vintage Guide, 2018 , 2018
2019Like 2017, bone-dry but cool, small but pristine crop showing freshness and concentration some pick this as an exceptional white-wine vintage. Likely longer-lived than 2018 Cape Vintage Guide, 2019 , 2019
2020Hailed for concentration, freshness, svelte tannins and modest alcohol. Bigger crop too- real gift after series of drought-diminished harvests. Cape Vintage Guide, 2020 , 2020
2021A bumper crop, lauded as exceptional for reds and whites thanks to cool temperatures, unusually high rainfall and a late harvest, which helped ease stock holding pressure caused by 2020’s ban on exports and restrictions on local sales. Cape Vintage Guide, 2021 , 2021
2022A cool pre-season and moderate weather slowed down ripening, giving reds and whites of excellent quality with good acidity. Except for Stellenbosch and Cape South Coast, somewhat smaller crop than usual. Cape Vintage Guide, 2022 , 2022
