Made from 40 percent Chardonnay, 45 percent Pinot Noir and 15 percent Pinot Meunier, Ruinart makes use of 30 percent reserve wine and is aged on its lees for three years. The 2017 vintage has classic brioche yeasty notes whilst also showing fresh   granny smith apples. The palate is lined with lively bubbles and carries a long aftertaste. This brings about a crisp yet rich and creamy mouthfeel. Made of 76% Chardonnay/ 24 % Pinot Noir. The grapes were harvested early in the morning by hand to keep the fruit cool. Made of 60% Pinot Noir that imparts a clean flintiness and 40% Chardonnay for its distinctive body and taste. It has a delicate salmon pink hue, delicate yeasty tones with whiffs of baked bread and ripe berry fruit on the nose. Springfield Estate Méthode Ancienne Chardonnay is in the ancient style of Burgundy, rarely is this technique with wild yeast and no fining/filtration used in the new world. A singular wine produced from a special and unique vineyard on the Waterford Estate property. Vines were planted in 1988 making it one of the oldest Chard. Vineyards in the country. In this 2019 vintage you will find a bright, olive-green color which has become a notable characteristic of this single vineyard Chardonnay. The aromatics of this wine are driven by fresh peach pip, lime and a light touch of oak from the barrel.  Our older vines still prove to produce lovely restrained, tightly structured wines that are rather perfumed when young, but develop beautifully during bottle maturation. This wine is blended from a handful of the top performing blocks on this property, each chosen for their exquisite flavor and aromatic profile. On the nose the wine opens with crisp green apples and lime blossom. This evolves to incorporate a complex mélange of lemongrass, petrichor and subtle blackcurrant leaf. The Real McCoy (the real thing) celebrates the legislative change regarding the naming of Riesling in South Africa. The German clone grapes were vinified and once the perfect balance between sugar and acidity was reached, the fermentation was stopped to retain a hint of natural fruit sugars. Stellenrust Chenin Blanc - the Cinderella grape, has taken Stellenrust on an extraordinary journey of discovery. Today she is truly the belle of the ball and deserves every honor bestowed upon her.  Stellenrust has won the International Trophy for the Best Chenin Blanc in the World at the International Wine & Spirit Competition for two consecutive years. “Secret and Lies is a barrel fermented Chenin Blanc and showcases the normal treatment of partial reductive handling of juice in the winery with fermentation happening with wild yeast in two and three-year-old French oak barrels. The oak influence is minimal and supports, by means of a vanilla backdrop, the rich tropical flavors Chenin can produce. A tinge of botrytis adds (3% botrytis fruit from the same vineyard added) a touch of sun-kissed ripeness to a dry wine.  Tropical fruit characteristics with peach, apricot, bruised apple and lemon zest on the nose. This combines with cream, nutmeg and nuttiness on the palate.  The traditional way of making Chenin and part of the house style. A little bit of residual and a little bit of wood come into play. Anthony Hamilton Russell, narrowed the range to Pinot noir and Chardonnay only and registered Hamilton Russell Vineyards as an Estate, committing to work only with grapes from their terroir. His Vineyards – one of the most southerly wine Estates in Africa and one of the closest to the sea – pioneered viticulture and winemaking in the beautiful, cool, maritime Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, just behind the village of Hermanus. The terroir driven Pinot noir and Chardonnay, which are widely regarded as the best in S. Africa and among the finest in the New World. Our low-vigour, stony, clay-rich soil, cool maritime mesoclimate, naturally tiny yields under 35 hl/ha. The philosophy of expressing our terroir in our wines – give rise to a certain tightness, tannin line and elevated length to balance the richness and generosity of our P.Noir. A graduate of the exclusive Scuola Enologica di Conegliano (Wine Academy) in Italy, cook, philosopher, gourmand, , Giorgio Dala Cia together with his son George  has long shared his love of good wine and culinary pleasures with an enchanted public. The name Giorgio Dalla Cia will always be associated with the iconic Rubicon, one of the first Bordeaux style blends in South Africa which earned him the accolade of South Africa’s Champion Winemaker in 1980 and producer of the best red blend in the world in 2006.  This 2013 Classico Cabernet Sauvignon was barrel matured for 18 month in French Oak. Set in the heart of the mountain-ringed Robertson Valley in the Western Cape of South Africa, Springfield Estate is a family-run wine farm owned by ninth-generation descendants of French Huguenots, who came to South Africa from the Loire in 1688 with bundles of vines under their arms .In order to achieve a luscious, juicy wine, we try to have as little intervention in the cellar as possible. Simply de-stemmed, the whole, uncrushed bunches are transported using only a gravity flow system. Whole berry maceration is followed by fermentation with natural yeasts, racking and one year’s maturation in oak barrels. The result is a velvety wine with softer tannins and classical varietal characteristics. This traditional wine is unfiltered and unfined, which may deposit sediment.      

2015 Near –perfect conditions produced a smaller but pristine crop displaying exceptional quality across the style spectrum. One of the great vintages is possibly surpassing 2009! Aging potential until 2030. 13.5. % Alc .

 François Rabelais was a monk, doctor and writer in sixteenth-century France who imagined a utopian abbey on the banks of the Loire. In stark contrast to the religious orders of his day, this community admitted both men and women and encouraged them to live together in great luxury. Only one law governed its members: “Fay ce que vouldras” – Do what thou wilt! This was the Abbey of Thélème, which ultimately lent its name to our vineyard on the slopes of the Simonsberg Mountain: Thelema The most likely source of the “mint” character could be attributed to the airborne transfer from the Eucalyptus trees, which border this specific Cabernet Sauvignon Vineyard, to the grape berries. It is believed that the berries outer wax layer could adsorb Eucalyptol, a compound responsible for the aroma, released into the air by the trees. It subsequently becomes dissolved during the fermentation process, which takes place on the skins, inevitably giving the wine a “minty” character unique to this vineyard. Ripe red berry, cassis and dark chocolate flavours are complimented by hints of mint and on the palate. The wine has fine tannins with a long, mocha finish. Alc 14. %

This vintage delivered a medium bodied wine with a savory nose and slight cedar characters. Ripe, yet soft tannins complement the aromas of plump, dark, red fruit and ripe strawberries with a hint of dark chocolate, cocoa green herbs and wet stones on the nose. Well integrated vanilla oak and enough backbone to age further in the bottle. Meticulous hand sorting before fermenting naturally for 10 days in stainless steel tanks and then pressed.This wine has been matured in 30% new French oak barrels for 16 months and is ready for drinking now, but will continue to develop over the next 5-10 years. 14. % Alc

History of the well-known Thelema Estate : The sacred phoenix appears in ancient Arabian, Egyptian, Greek, Roman, Chinese and Indian mythology, but a little closer to home, the phoenix also symbolizes the birth of Thelema, and is present on both sides of the Thelema family. The McLeans owned the Phoenix Garden Hotel in Kimberley, and there is a phoenix on the Webb family crest. This wine is a limited release of the finest Merlot of the vintage. It is rich and complex and showing extraordinary concentrations of ripe berries and cedar wood. It is a blend of the best parcels within Thelema’s merlot vineyards. Notes of violets, sweet piquant plummy black fruits and a wonderful undertone of graphite. On the palate, there are layers upon layers of black and blue berry fruits, espresso notes and fabulous Depth. Wood maturation took place for 18 months in 100 % new French oak barrels. The name Merlot is thought to be a diminutive of merle, the French name for the blackbird. At Jordan Wine Estate, our Merlot vineyards are based on Black Tourmaline-rich granite which darkens the soil, leading to perfumed, inky wines. Harvested from mature east and west facing vineyards established on mother soils of decomposed granite. Part whole-berry fermentation and softer pump-overs extract aromas of red plums and dark bitter chocolate. Meinert wines are made in small quantities from meticulously selected vineyards, with much thought and care. Fermented with natural yeasts and made in classic, minimal interventionist manner with no extended skin maceration. All the components were vinified separately and matured for 18 months in a selection of first, second, third and fourth fill French oak barrels and racked at intervals as necessary. On the nose, the rounded, supple fruit gains complexity from a roasted pepper and herbal character. The texture is beautifully supple, and the tannin is really refined. Our Writer’s Block Pinotage is crafted from dry-land (non-irrigated) bush vines in Swartland. The variety, a crossing of Pinot Noir and Cinsaut, was first bred by scientist Abraham Perold in 1925, although the few seeds the crossing yielded were planted in his garden and consequently forgotten. The vines were found some years later, grafted onto disease-resistant rootstocks and the first commercial plantings were made in 1943. The name Pinotage is a portmanteau of its two parents, as Cinsaut  was then known in South Africa as Hermitage. Made in the new style of fruitier Pilotages. The Stork Shiraz honors the late Ken Mackenzie, pilot, businessman, farmer and benefactor.  Stork was Ken’s Second World War nickname (as he was tall with long thin legs and a Spitfire pilot) and Shiraz was his preferred red wine.  This limited volume wine represents a vineyard selection of Shiraz from a specific site that is planted solely on clay–rich "terra rossa" type soils. Spectacular panoramic views of Stellenbosch and Cape Town, cool hillside vineyards planted to classic varieties, and a modern family-run winery have combined to produce distinctive wines displaying the ripe concentrated fruity accessibility of the New World, with the complex elegance of classic wine styles. Harvested from a single west-facing vineyard overlooking Cape Town and Table Mountain. The gold rush of the 1800’s led to the discovery of tin in the gravels underlying the Syrah vineyards at Jordan. The Allesverloren Legacy: The history of our Swartland winery dates back to somewhere between 1696 and 1704, when the governor of the Cape left it to a widow named Cloete. A small family winery in the mountains above Stellenbosch South A. established in 1992 by David Trafford & artist wife Rita. Elevation 393 their flagship wine, a selection of the best barrels from their home vineyard at 393m above sea level.

Instead of a plan of the winery on the label, the bottle shows an elevation drawing of their home in the middle of the vineyard. Usually, the core of the blend is Cabernet Sauvignon which is in the middle of the vineyard. Followed by Merlot, from the richer clay soil at the bottom of the vineyard & Syrah, at the highest and steepest section. The aim of Elevation is to express this remarkable site to the full and accentuate the character of each vintage, rather than a more homogeneous style.

Attractive deep red, youthful colour at 7 years old. Rich intense spicy fruitcake nose with a mix of black and red berries. Some fine tobacco, toast and cedar from the fine French oak. Intense, concentrated palate with thick, broad tannins, though still fine. Long finish and loads of potential. The Ultimate Expression of Jordan Terroir. A limited-release wine, honouring the Jordan family heritage as master cobblers Fashion is fickle and with everyone pre-occupied with reds which are medium bodied and can be drunk slightly chilled, Bordeaux-style blends which tend to be more intense seem to be suffering from a lack of attention. For those who still like their reds to be substantial, Jordan Cobblers Hill 2015 is a fine proposition. 48% Cabernet Sauvignon, 43% Merlot and 9% Cabernet Franc, it was matured for 24 months in oak, 70% new and at this stage of its life, it’s nothing if not dense and brooding. The nose is initially quite closed but opens wonderfully to reveal cassis, cranberry, violets, vanilla and oak spice. The palate is richly layered and intriguing with a variety of opulent flavours which includes Sichuan pepper and blackcurrants. The 24-month barrel ageing adds viscosity and a spicy finish. There’s also an herbaceous edge to the wine – not minty and quite attractive, providing lift and refreshment. The wine is perfect to drink now until 2024.

The Barlows have owned and run Rustenberg for over 80 years, the longest any one family has been custodian of the estate. This wine is named for a former owner of Rustenberg, John Xavier Merriman, who bought the farm in 1892 in sympathy with farmers suffering from the phyloxera crisis. (Who was to become Prime Minister of the Cape) He played a great role in revitalizing Rustenberg and in promoting the tourism and agricultural -layered palate with an elegant tannin structure. This Bordeaux blend typifies Rustenberg terroir and has good ageing potential. 10-15 years. Our 2011 vintage expresses plum and cigar-box aromatics with an elegant tannin structure. Legend in its own time, Cape classic in its own right. Bordeaux style blend from low-yielding 30 plus year old vines. Big, bold, definitely packs in the front row; richly rewarding when given its due time 10 years-15 years, or more. Kanonkop Paul Sauer 2011 has a deep ruby red colour. Nose: Complex bouquet with black currant, red berry, mocha and spicy flavours. Mouth: Structured, elegant, delicate. Full bodied - solid oak tannins with intense berry, nutty and vanilla flavours. This drop is very well balanced. A classic since 1981; has Cape character plus international sophistication. Magnificent 2011 vintage an indulgence to rival the best. Complex opulence held back in restrained, compact form, promises to reveal over decades. Dark, winey style, featuring beautiful crimson red. Classic funk on the nose with soft dark fruit undertones. Deep ruby red colour. A combination of the varietals gives you more than the sum of the parts. This specific vintage is a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Cabernet Franc and 12% Merlot. Aged in 100% new 225 litre French Nevers for 24 months.

Our iconic flagship blend, named after the owner of Waterford Estate, Jeremy Ord, or “Jem”, as he is known. It is a master blend of different varietals that collectively epitomize the best of the vintage at Waterford. A wine that truly expresses our underlying philosophy at Waterford Estate, by reflecting the diversity and exceptional fruit of the farm. Inviting aromatics of rich dark chocolate and plum fruit, with additional layers of earthy tones, clove spice, crushed violets and a combination of dark, red berries. The palate is well balanced and effortlessly complements the aromatics. Coated with velvety tannins which provide fullness, and a natural acidity that adds vibrance and elegance to the lasting finish.

Displaying a classic dry profile, generosity on the palate, and texture that fully represents its heritage.

EVOLUTION AFTER NEARLY 10 YEARS: Now this wine displays consistently in terms of its color and expression, but with evolutionary notes of Cuban cigars and spiced cedar, mulberry and damson fruit and the further exploration of the clove and pepper spice. The wine remains youthful and poised with elegant silky tannins which grip the palate. It truly expresses the diversity of terroir and soils. All different grape varietals are grown on the property. The wine will continue to develop over the next 10 -15 years. WO Stellenbosch

The winery is located north of the town of Paarl in the South African wine district of the same name. It was bought in 1988 by South Africa's most famous opera tenor Deon van der Walt (1958-2005), who ran it together with his brother Marcel. The owner named the estate after the Dutch place of origin of his ancestors Veenwouden (Fairy Forest), who emigrated to the Cape in 1727.

The well-known French oenologist Michel Rolland and the cellar master Giorgio Dalla Cia from the Meerlust Estate were engaged as advisors. The planting of the new vineyards commenced in 1989, and by 1993 12 ha was finally under wine vines. This Bordeaux blend has a dense, saturated purple colour with an aromatic offering of liquorice, violets and crushed dark mulberry. This is followed on the palate by cassis, a hint of espresso roast and lead pencil. This full-bodied wine exhibits terrific extract with ripe tannins, exquisite balance and long supple velvety finish..The wine will steadily develop over the next 10 -20 years. Stellenrust was established in 1928 and has ever since produced some of the most superb quality wines that the Stellenbosch region from South Africa. The planting of the new vineyards commenced in 1989, and by 1993 12 ha was finally under wine vines. Vineyard notes: "It consists of about 400ha (200ha planted) of which half is stretched over the Golden Triangle area of Stellenbosch, internationally recognized for some of the best red wine soil in South Africa. The other half is situated high up in the Bottelary Hills, renowned for its cool climate and late afternoon sea breezes swooping in from Cape Town to nurture both excellent white and red wines. The Timeless is a sensual blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The nose shows dark berries and cassis with a background of subtle menthol flavours. The palate is rich and invigorating with gripping tannins, fresh acidity and pronounced berry flavors, tobacco spice and cedar oak. “Ataraxia = a serene state of mind free from worry and preoccupation “

Hemel-en-Aarde is Afrikaans for “heaven and earth” and the claim is justified. The estate sits on a particularly heavenly stretch of land beneath a lofty peak of the Babylon’s Tower mountain range. In 2004 The Skyfields Farm was visioned into the Ataraxia wine label when husband and wife Kevin and Hanli Grant and a few friends purchased this 47-hectare prime vineyard property. Two decades later we are associated with crafting wines of incredible finesse balance and depth. Kevin Grant has just one goal for Ataraxia’ s red blend – to have the confidence to “whisper”

style through the ultimate expression of site rather than “shout” brashness though winemaking excesses. Consequently he does not focus on the cultivars that make up this blend and has never disclosed them. His quest is to show that “where from” is far more important than “what from” in achieving a particular wine style and that wine with a sense of place is the truest expression of its personality. Tasting notes: A wine that possesses a finely scented, vibrant nose with hints of red berry fruit andintriguing mineral and spicy notes. Mouth-watering and polished grape tannins are wrapped in an elegant structure that subtly occupies all corners of one’s palate.

WO Hermanus – Hemel-en-Aarde

Long and late, bedevilled by uneven berry-set and an early aroma-stripping heat wave. Yet cooler dry conditions yielded healthy, elegant, often age worthy wines with lower alcs and yielding tannins. Chardonnay, Merlot and Shiraz especially promising.

Short, early and particularly challenging. Bone-dry winter followed by early-season rains, sparking disease and excessive plant vigour; then prolonged heat waves. Concentrated if alcoholic reds; whites mostly average, some stellar exceptions.

Excellent and largely problem free (though complicated by Western Cape power cuts) Perhaps the best white-wine vintage in a decade – particularly expressive Sauvignons and Chenins.

Fleshy mild tannined reds, with lower alcohols all round.

Started hot and fast, ended with rain & lower temperatures. High hopes for elegant structured whites, notably Sauvignon; smaller red-grape berries resulted intense colour and fruit concentration, especially for Cab and Shiraz.

Long, wet, late and challenging but also unusually cool season, favouring elegance in both reds and whites, with ripeness generally achieved at lower alcohols.

Perhaps one of the greatest Cape vintages. Late and gruelling but whites and reds both look stellar. Standout Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Riesling, Shiraz and Cabernet and Merlot.

“A thinking winemaker’s harvest”, with destructive winds, unseasonable rains, heat waves and reduced crops hitting many areas. Later ripening whites and reds, and cooler /sheltered areas seem to have fared best – but very difficult to generalise.

Yet more variable than last vintage, impossible to generalise. As in 2010, producer’s track record should guide the buying/cellaring decision.

Unusually dry, hot January strained unirrigated vineyards; otherwise, good to very good vintage for both reds and whites; moderate alcohol levels.

Biggest crop to date, moderate conditions yielded good to very good reds and whites, lighter alcohol levels.

Later, slightly smaller and unusually cool, among wettest pre-seasons in years. Seemingly lighter, less powerful wines, potential for fine concentrations and elegance if picked judiciously.

Near–perfect conditions produced a smaller but pristine crop displaying exceptional quality across the style spectrum. One of the great vintages possibly surpassing 2009

Exceptionally hot, dry and challenging, with later-ripening varieties benefiting from lower temperatures. In cool climates, disease-free conditions could yield some stellar wines.

Growers expecting a worsening of 2016’s drought and extreme heat were pleasantly surprised when the latter failed to materialise, resulting in a smaller but excellent crop with freshness and fine flavour concentration on reds as well as whites

Challenging year for reds and whites, lingering drought requiring particular focus on optimal picking times, conserving vine resources and managing extractions. Generally healthy, smaller berries yielded sound, concentrated if perhaps earlier-peaking wines.

Like 2017, bone-dry but cool, small but pristine crop showing freshness and concentration some pick this as an exceptional white-wine vintage. Likely longer-lived than 2018

Hailed for concentration, freshness, svelte tannins and modest alcohol. Bigger crop too- real gift after series of drought-diminished harvests.

A bumper crop, lauded as exceptional for reds and whites thanks to cool temperatures, unusually high rainfall and a late harvest, which helped ease stock holding pressure caused by 2020’s ban on exports and restrictions on local sales.

A cool pre-season and moderate weather slowed down ripening, giving reds and whites of excellent quality with good acidity. Except for Stellenbosch and Cape South Coast, somewhat smaller crop than usual.
